BOISE - With a “difficult” fire season looming, firefighters are facing budget cuts that will result in 500 fewer firefighters for the Forest Service alone and 50 fewer engines available, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said this morning in a visit to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise. “We’re going to be faced obviously with a difficult fire season, make no mistake about that,” he said. “The resources are limited. Everyone seems related to everyone else in North Idaho. This includes the female jogger that S-R sports scribe Greg Lee and I met near the LCSC/UIdaho branch campus Wednesday. We flagged her down during a noon walk along Coeur d’Alene’s waterfront – to warn her. Greg and I had seen a strange guy hiding in the thick pines a short distance up the trail. We made eye contact with him – and he moved deeper into the trees. The jogger thanked us and turned around.

Eye on Boise: April tax revenue well above forecasters’ expectations - Sun, 12 May 2013 PST

thefirearmblog - Sun, 05/12/2013 - 07:00
BOISE – Because Idaho budgets based on forecasts and estimates of how much tax revenue will come in, there’s always some anticipation about how revenues fare in April, the biggest revenue month of the year. Gov. Butch Otter persuaded lawmakers, at the end of this year’s legislative session, to pass a bill to put any unexpected surplus at year’s end into the state’s rainy-day fund, and while lawmakers obliged, they said they doubted any such surplus would materialize. But it has. The April numbers are in, and Idaho’s general fund tax revenue that month came in 13.2 percent ahead of forecasts, with collections surging $56.4 million above the expected level. That was the largest margin by far of any month this fiscal year.

BOISE – Controversial legislation to let extra-heavy, extra-long trucks on Idaho roads is now law, but it’s unlikely new routes will be designated for the heavier trucks in North Idaho before next spring. Idaho’s state transportation board is starting a lengthy process to figure out how to handle requests for trucks exceeding the state’s current 105,500-pound weight limit, including requests for segments of busy, winding U.S. Highway 95 in North Idaho. The new rules would be presented to lawmakers for approval in their 2014 legislative session.
